THE STORY SO FAR
6 Strings 4 Cancer was set up by Gary Bertwistle in 2010.
In 2007 Gary co-founded a cycling charity called the Tour de Cure which donates funds to projects that help men, women and children suffering with cancer via funding research, education and facility projects. Tour de Cure has so far raised almost $4 million in the fight against cancer and the search for a cure.
As a result of his experiences with Tour de Cure and his passion for music, Gary saw an opportunity to set up an organisation that is not designed as a fundraiser or as a vehicle for spreading the cancer message, but purely and simply about enhancing the lives of those people going through cancer treatment in hospital.
Much has been written about the enormous impact music can have on treatment recovery and the psychology of dealing with cancer.
6 Strings 4 Cancer has been set up to facilitate and formalise the process of coordinating musicians who would like to volunteer their time with the requirements of the hospital cancer wards, to create a unique opportunity to give those living with cancer the opportunity to enjoy the healing power of live music as part of their hospital cancer treatment.
The program has been established in Sydney but aims to expand to other metro and regional areas of Australia over the next few years.
